Wrinkles and Folds: A Loose Liner, Not a Damaged One 

 

Step on it barefoot. If the crease travels under your foot, it's a wrinkle - the vinyl is loose, not injured. Wrinkles collect on the pool floor and the shallow-end slope, where the liner has the least tension holding it down.

 

They also go by folds and creases, and pool techs use all three interchangeably. Nothing about a wrinkle means your liner is failing. It means your liner has more material in one spot than the floor underneath it needs.

 

The reason it got loose matters - but it matters later. First, find out whether the whole floor is moving.

Groundwater under the shell pushes the pool liner up off the floor. You walk in the morning after a storm, and the bottom springs back at you. That's a float, not a wrinkle.

Press it. If it doesn't move, you're not touching the liner - you're touching the pool base through the liner.

  • Divot - a heel print. Someone walked on the fresh vermiculite or grout base before it set.
  • Dent - a trowel pressed too hard, something dropped in during construction, or the liner went down before the base cured.
  • Bump - a rock, or a ball of over-mixed vermiculite that rolled downhill during troweling.

 

The soft/hard distinction is the one that costs money. A vermiculite ball squashes flat under your hand and can be ignored forever. A rock cannot. Most owners assume the lump underfoot is a stone; more often it's vermiculite. Push it before you panic.

The Plunger Method: What It Works On (and the Signal to Stop)

A clean toilet plunger will move a crease a few feet across a warm floor. It will not move a fold the length of your shallow end. Set your expectations there and you'll be fine.

 

Press the cup down beside the wrinkle, pull up and toward the nearest wall, then flatten what's left with your foot. Work the crease outward to open floor - never poke at its middle.

 

The stop signal: if the vinyl blanches white where you're pulling, or you see a stretch line appear alongside the crease, stop immediately. You are no longer moving the liner. You are thinning it. Blanching means you've passed the material's give, and that spot is now the thinnest part of your pool.

 

Most owners fail here by pulling hard instead of pulling often. Ten light passes beat one heavy one.

 

The Wet Vacuum Method: Tightening the Liner Without Draining

 

A shop vacuum pulls the air and water out from behind the liner, and the vinyl sucks back down flat against the floor and walls. It handles the middle ground - folds too big for a plunger, not big enough to justify draining.

 

The setup: water down to roughly half, hose fed between the top of the liner and the coping track, a wet towel packed around the hose to hold the seal. The liner tightens in minutes, and you refill while the vacuum is still running.

 

Two honest limits. The hose must never touch the liner directly - it will mark it. And if the wrinkles come back within a few days, the vacuum isn't the answer; you have live groundwater pressure and you need drainage work, not another reset.

Three things move you inside those ranges, and they're not small:

  • Region: ±10–25%. Northeast and West Coast inground jobs sit at the top - higher labor, shorter season.

You'll see "5–9 years" from one builder, "7–10" from another, "10–15" from a manufacturer. All three are honest. The spread is the point.

The industry likes to say liner life comes down to luck. It doesn't. It comes down to a variable almost nobody measures - the swing in your water chemistry, not its average. A pool that sits at 7.5 all summer and a pool that averages 7.5 by bouncing between 6.9 and 8.1 have the same logbook and very different liners. Four numbers, and one thing you should never do again:

  • Total alkalinity 80–120 ppm. This is what stops pH from swinging. Alkalinity is the brake.
  • Cyanuric acid 30–50 ppm. Too little and UV eats your chlorine; too much and your chlorine stops working while you keep adding it.
